about

Darvid Thor is a 24-year old Melbourne based artist making woozy bedroom pop. On his latest track “Get Out”, Darvid delivers a skewed pop ballad, revealing a different side from his past singles. With fluid, floating textures and lyrics plucked from a head resting on a morning pillow, there’s an eerie intimacy to it.

The track starts minimally with Darvid’s warm tenor floating over washy guitars and melodic bass. The singing is almost out of time; drawled and spoken rather than sung, “reflecting a feeling of getting lost in your head,” Darvid says. As this grows, it evolves into a dark and murky world of swirling synthesizers, wonky slide guitar (nods to Connan Mockasin & King Krule) and Darvid’s delicate falsetto. “‘Get Out’ is quite literally about trying to get out of your own way... out of your head. It’s about navigating all that internal stuff and getting through it”

Recorded and performed by Darvid, “Get Out” is the third track lifted from his debut mini-album I’m Never Really Here, due for release in early 2019. At times anxious and quietly anguished, tender and candid, these are songs about a growing-up, a breakup, and everything in between. “Do It Again” & “Rest of Your Life,” reveal a more straight-ahead dream-pop style; a sweet melancholy of jangly guitars and warbled synthesizers that have afforded support from Danger Mouse, Double J, Triple J Unearthed and Indie Shuffle to name a few. You might also recognise him from alt-soul group The Cactus Channel, or dreamy pop outfit Frida.

lyrics

I wish I could find your gaze
Stuck inside, rotate
Leave the noise for suchi
Claiming that they knew me
Turn me into sushi
And let the waves go through me
Sometimes I’m tiny
Tuck me into bed and let me find the words

I’ve got to get out
So I can find you
Try to reach out
Go back to the start
I’ve got to get out
So I can find you
Try to reach out
And find

I won’t give you up
We know, don’t take ourselves away

You reminded me again
Of what it was back then
Am I insane
Or is the world beside me
No longer spinning
When your face was spiralling
Put me down gently
I’m losing energy exponentially
Save me from myself

Aaaaahhhhh
Everywhere we go
Turning inside out
See you through the mask
Turning it around
Ahhhhh

Reach over to me now Ahhhh
I want to be
Outside
